A DEVELOPMENT PATHWAY

The Judo Aotearoa Development Squad supports talented young judoka from across Aotearoa New Zealand by providing a clear, supportive pathway for growth. We recognise that individual clubs work with players at all stages of development, and that offering advanced training to top athletes can be a challenge. Our Development Squad programme is designed to enhance—not replace—club training by offering high-level opportunities for growth, learning, and connection.

SUPPLEMENTARY TRAINING

Squad members continue to train with their home clubs but also attend dedicated workshops around four times a year, usually over a weekend. These workshops focus on advanced judo techniques and are complemented by sessions in supplementary skills such as fitness, stamina, nutrition, and wellbeing. Our partnership with the Millennium Institute of Sport ensures squad members receive world-class physical testing and personalised supplementary training programmes.

IRON HARDENS IRON; LEARNING FROM PEERS

One of the biggest benefits of the Development Squad is the opportunity to train alongside other driven, high-performing athletes. When young judoka are surrounded by peers who share their commitment, intensity, and hunger to improve, growth happens faster and deeper.

These squad sessions create a space where everyone is challenged—technically, physically, and mentally. Athletes push each other to higher levels, refine their skills through meaningful resistance, and are exposed to a wider range of styles and techniques than they might see within their own clubs.

This environment not only accelerates skill development, but also builds resilience, confidence, and camaraderie. It reminds our athletes that they’re part of something bigger—a national community of judoka committed to excellence, growth, and mutual respect.

INTERNATIONAL TRAINING AND COMPETITION

Through our international networks, squad members have the opportunity to train and compete overseas in countries such as Japan and Australia. Scholarships are available to help support these opportunities and are awarded at the discretion of Judo Aotearoa based on a range of factors, including commitment, attitude, and potential.

DEVELOPMENT THAT BENEFITS THE ENTIRE JUDO COMMUNITY

Effort, positivity, and a willingness to contribute are key qualities we look for. We expect squad members to take what they learn and bring it back to enrich their local club environments.
