Training in the Home of Judo: Judo Aotearoa Athletes in Japan

Over the past two years, Judo Aotearoa has proudly supported our athletes training in Japan with four athletes travelling in 2024, and another five making the journey in 2025. These trips have proven to be an incredible opportunity for growth, both on and off the mat.

Why Japan?

Japan is widely recognised as the spiritual and technical home of Judo. It’s where the sport was born, and where its traditions, values, and techniques continue to be honed at the highest levels. Training in Japan exposes our athletes to an intense level of technical precision, discipline, and innovation that is difficult to replicate anywhere else.

From high-level randori (sparring) in elite dojos to detailed technical instruction from experienced Japanese coaches, every session offers something new. Athletes quickly learn to adapt, sharpen their timing, and rethink familiar techniques from a fresh perspective. This exposure leads to faster improvement in both performance and understanding of the sport.

Beyond the Mat

While the Judo is world-class, the experience doesn't stop there. Our athletes also gain unforgettable insight into Japanese culture and everyday life. Staying in Japanese homes, attending local schools, and training in community dojos gives them a deep and personal connection to the country and its people.

From shared meals and cultural customs to learning simple phrases in Japanese and exploring local traditions, the experience is immersive and enriching. Many of our athletes describe the trip as life-changing, with several already making plans to return.

Looking Ahead

We’re proud of the way these young Judoka have embraced the challenge, represented Aotearoa with pride, and returned home more skilled, more confident, and more connected to the global Judo community.

At Judo Aotearoa, we’re committed to providing more of these international opportunities as part of our athlete development pathway. Watch this space—Japan is just the beginning.
